Olympic boxer quits in tears after punch from gender row ring rival left her 'unable to breathe'

Angela Carini was left "heartbroken" and in tears after she withdrew from her Olympic r Olympic match against Imane Khalif, who had previously failed a sex test.

Carini lasted only 46 SECONDS before signalling to the referee following a punch, consulting with her corner, and then deciding to retire from the fight. The official declared Khalif the victor, but Carini did not acknowledge her adversary, instead collapsing in tears as she grappled with the collapse of her Olympic aspirations.

Later, Carini confessed to being "heartbroken" and explained her withdrawal by saying she had never been struck so forcefully, emphasising her intent to "honour her father and represent her country". Her coach expressed concern that Carini might have sustained a broken nose. Khelif, on the other hand, opted not to respond to journalists' inquiries. Khelif had failed a testosterone level test prior to her gold medal bout at the previous year's World Championship but received clearance to compete at the Paris Olympic Games.

In anticipation of her first bout against Carini in the 66kg category, the Algerian Olympic Committee released a statement condemning the criticism directed at Khelif. "Such attacks on her personality and dignity are deeply unfair, especially as she prepares for the pinnacle of her career at the Olympics," the committee from Algeria stated. "The COA has taken all necessary measures to protect our champion."

Khelif landed an early blow against Carini, who pulled out after being hit on the chin. The fight was over in just 45
