Olympian Oliver Dingley announces retirement

Two-time Olympian Oliver Dingley has confirmed his retirement.

The 29-year-old international diver participated in two Olympics for Ireland, making his debut at Rio 2016 when he became the first Irish competitor to appear in a diving event at the Games in 68 years.

Dingley went on to reach the final of the 3M springboard in Rio, ultimately achieving an eighth place finish, and was also part of Team Ireland's diving squad at Tokyo 2020 last year.

He announced his retirement in a statement on Twitter.

"After just over 20 years of diving, I have reached the decision to retire," Dingley said.

"The past 20 years have held many challenges but importantly, many great memories and experiences I will always cherish."

The Harrogate-born athlete added that "the pinnacle to me was representing Ireland at the Olympic Games" and that it had been "a privilege to be a part of the Irish diving family".

I'M OFFICIALLY RETIRED. Thank you everyone who has been apart of my diving journey, the love and support has gone beyond anything I could have ever dreamed and despite one chapter closing, I can not wait to see what the next brings! pic.twitter.com/3dcbSKH8ZM
