Oleksandr Usyk missed birth of daughter as wife 'sacrificed' family time for Tyson Fury

Oleksandr Usyk, the heavyweight world champion, missed the birth of his daughter due to his fight with Tyson Fury. His wife Yekaterina was expecting their fourth child around the same time as the fight, initially scheduled for December.

However, because Fury's fight against Francis Ngannou in October didn't go as planned, the match with Usyk was delayed by two months. This meant that Usyk was in Spain training when his daughter Maria was born. The fight has now been moved to May 18.

Usyk shared his feelings about missing important family moments. "I sacrificed all the dates we used to spend with my family," he said. He missed Christmas, New Year, his birthday, his son's birthdays, and the birth of his daughter. He wished he could have been there for his wife during the birth.

"I want to go back home, to hug my daughter, to thank my wife, to spend two or three days at home and then come back to camp." Usyk found out late that his fight with Fury was off again. He was finishing a training session when he heard Fury had to pull out because of a cut.

Usyk didn't let it bother him and just kept on training. "I was already in the ring when the news occurred, when I finished the last round," he explained. "Sergey [Lapin, Usyk's team manager] came up to me, smiling and feeling uncomfortable. He said we had some sort of news; I smiled and went back to the training, working with the boxing bag."
