Oleksandr Usyk: Boxing champion missed a sitter just seconds into his pro football debut

Oleksandr Usyk made his professional football debut on Friday afternoon.

The Boxing heavyweight champion of the world has been training with Ukrainian second division side, FC Polissya, in recent weeks.

Their director, Volodymyr Zagursky, hinted that he could be given a contract.

He told The Times Hub, per the Mirror: “If Usyk strengthens our team, we will offer a professional contract, if not, we will just give a chance to try his hand at football.”

Usyk was given a chance to show what he could do as he was named among the substitutes for FC Polissya’s friendly against UPL Veres.

With FC Polissya 2-1 up in the 76th minute of the Winter Cup fixture, the manager decided to give Usyk his professional bow.

Wearing the number 17 shirt, Usyk had a golden opportunity to mark his debut with a goal.

One of his teammates ran down the byline and pulled the ball back for the 35-year-old.

Usyk was just a few yards out and had the whole goal to aim at, but he could not make contact with the ball and the opportunity went begging.
