Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tells Sir Jim Ratcliffe how to deal with Man United's Old Trafford problem

Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has suggested that the club ‘might have to’ build a new stadium to ‘move with the times’.

The takeover of the club by INEOS has brought much anticipation of the investment that will be coming in future years. While some of the focus will be on transfer dealings to bring players to the club, there is likely to be investment off the pitch too.

The Telegraph report that Jim Ratcliffe wants to create a ‘Wembley of the North’ with what be a rejuvenation project of Old Trafford. There has been much need for updates with leaky roofs just one of the problems.

The Manchester Evening News understands that a renovation of the stadium would be complicated due to the railway lines and existing structures around the site. Another option would be to completely rebuild a new stadium, ending the 114-year association with Old Trafford.

That is something that Solskjaer, who played 366 times as a played for United and managed the club between December 2018 and 2021, believes may be the best option. Although, he says history is important the current state of the stadium means that the club is falling behind its competitors off the pitch as well as on it.

"We have to move with the times and at the moment something has to happen," he said, via Reuters. "It's either renovation or a new stadium because we're falling behind if we're staying in the same place we have.
