Ole Gunnar Solskjaer names Man United player who 'suffered most' from Cristiano Ronaldo transfer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo during the summer of 2021 killed Manchester United's style of play.

Ronaldo made a sensational return to Old Trafford three years ago, beating Manchester City to a deal, and remained at the club for 18 months before securing a move to Saudi Arabia in January 2023.

The Portuguese forward got off to the perfect start, scoring twice on his first start against Newcastle United and following this up with another goal in a 2-1 away win at West Ham United the next week.

Things soon turned sour, however, as attitude problems threatened to spoil Ronaldo's relationship with Solskjaer. A first example of this arrived after a 1-1 draw with Everton in October 2021, resulting in the 39-year-old storming off down the tunnel after the full-time whistle.

Limited to mainly substitute appearances during his final months at the club, it was clear at this stage Ronaldo required an exit for the benefit of the club and himself. Looking back on his decision to recruit the forward, Solskjaer said: "It was a very quick decision. We didn’t think Cristiano was available and that he was going to move. When it became apparent that he was leaving Juventus, obviously there were other clubs that wanted him – but I was excited.
