O'Mahony walks away after 'one of the best days of my life'

Aidan O'Mahony has completely retired from Gaelic football after helping Rathmore to All-Ireland intermediate glory on what he described as "one of the best days of my life".

The Kerrymen beat Galbally Pearses of Tyrone 1-11 to 0-11 at Croke Park on Sunday, and though O'Mahoney was an unused sub, the 42-year-old played his part in a memorable year for the club.

In 2017 he announced his inter-county retirement, departing the scene with five All-Irelands, three Allianz League titles and two All Stars to his name.

Now, he leaves the club game having experienced one last big day at Croker, confirming afterwards that he is hanging up his boots.

"That's it playing wise anyway," O'Mahony said as the dust settled on Rathmore's triumph.

"I've a three and a five-year-old a home; priorities have changed. You'd love to keep playing, but time wise and stuff like that, priorities have to change.

"If you asked me 20 years ago what would be a highlight of your career, irrelevant of playing with Kerry, it would be coming up to Croke Park to play with my club and my community. It was one of the best days of my life."

All-Star goalkeeper Shane Ryan played outfield for Rathmore and had a stormer, scoring 1-03 in a feisty encounter as Rathmore became the seventh Kerry team to win the intermediate club championship.

"It's a long year, we started last January," O'Mahony added.

"Our aim was to get the club back to senior. We were very lucky to win the championship at home, it's a very tough championship to come out of. But when you win Munster and get to Croke Park, you always want to win.

"I hate speaking, but I spoke at half-time. There was a lot of emotion in it, but just for the lads to experience that euphoria of winning... I was very lucky I had my
