Nyck de Vries hints Williams could be 'logical' move amid AlphaTauri links

Nyck de Vries has confirmed that he has held talks with several teams ahead of a potential move to a permanent Formula 1 seat in 2023.

The Dutchman has been on the periphery of F1 for some time, but he has been unable to secure a contract with a team for a full campaign.

He’s been on Mercedes’ books and also won both the Formula E and Formula 2 titles in his career thus far, but it appears only now he has a really good chance of getting himself on the grid for next season.

Indeed, he’s taken part in three FP1 sessions this year for Williams, Mercedes and Aston Martin respectively and done solid enough jobs in each, but it was his cameo for Williams at Monza that looks to have thrust him into the driver market spotlight for next year.

Standing in for Alex Albon over the weekend at the Italian Grand Prix after the Thai/British driver came down with appendicitis, De Vries quickly got up to speed and beat his team-mate Nicholas Latifi over both qualifying and the race, which naturally looks good on him and not so much on the Canadian.

Indeed, Latifi is out of contract with Williams ahead of 2023 and it has been suggested that De Vries could be the likely candidate to replace him as Albon’s team-mate, though several other destinations have been suggested as options for the Dutchman as well for next year, and his performance last time out has only heightened his reputation.

Alpine and AlphaTauri have both been linked with moves for De Vries, with the latter reported over the weekend as being particularly keen on getting him in to replace Pierre Gasly, who is being touted as Alpine’s pick to partner Esteban Ocon for next year.
