NUFC Women thrilled as Ant and Dec join fans showing their support for 'the lasses'

Newcastle United's women's team were thrilled to get a shout-out from Ant and Dec on Sunday as Magpies fans united behind 'the lasses'.

In a historic first for the team, NUFC's women appeared in front of a packed crowd of 22,134 at St James' Park to defeat Alnwick Town Ladies 4-0. And although their first game at Newcastle's stadium may have been a long time coming, there was no shortage of supporters ready to finally welcome them home.

They may not quite have managed to take Women's Premier League Northern Division 1 title (Liverpool Feds having wrapped up the trophy with a 6-1 win of their own earlier in the day), the historic match saw praised heaped on the team from NUFC supporters across the world.

And among their new supporters was beloved Geordie duo Ant and Dec. On Sunday, the pair Tweeted: " @NUFCWomen Howay the lasses!!! Congratulations on the win and the massive attendance today. Toon Toon!"

The team were delighted by the support from two of Newcastle's most famous fans. Midfielder Georgia Gibson replied: "Yes lads!!!" adding several black and white hearts to the Tweet.

The official NUFC women's account shared the message, adding: "Thanks for the support lads!"

The team had already received support from NUFC legend Alan Shearer, who sent them a video message ahead of the historic match.

In the short clip, he said: "I just wanted to say all the best, make sure you enjoy your first ever game at St James' Park - enjoy it as much as I did. Make sure you win, have a great day, all the best, cheers."
