Nsikak Etim wins 2023 MGI Scrabble Grand Slam

Former African Champion, Nsikak Etim, beat Timi Doko 441 to 400 over five rounds to win the 2023 Mindgames Inc. (MGI) Scrabble Grand Slam, which ended at Golfview Hotel,Ikeja, at the weekend.

The three-day MGI Grand Slam Championship featured over 30 top players from within and outside Nigeria, who vied for supremacy in 24 rounds of games.

Addressing his teammates after the event, Nsikak attributed his success to hard work and determinationand commended the organiser for providing the platform for the players to excel.

Also speaking at the closing ceremony, Nigeria Scrabble Federation President, Toke Aka, commended the organiser, Lukman Owolabi, for his contributions to the growth of scrabble in Nigeria.

“Owolabi’s contribution to the development of scrabble in Nigeria is appreciated. The NSF is ready to work with anybody ready to raise the standard of scrabble in the country.”

“We call on more sponsors to embrace scrabble as we are still a force to reckon with in the game across the world,” he said. Earlier, the MGI Scrabble Grand Slam convener, Owolabi, said that his vision is to keep promoting and creating more awareness in the sport across Nigeria.

He called on multinational organisations and well meaning Nigerians to sponsor the sport, saying that scrabble has the potential for growth.
Owolabi added that his organisation would make the MGI championship more attractive and competitive in future.

For winning the 2023 MGI Scrabble Grand Slam, Nsikak got N1 million and a trophy and one million Naira cash prize, while Doko received N500, 000 for winning the second position.
