Now we've qualified what faces Australia at the World Cup in Qatar?

Australia qualified for the 2022 Qatar World Cup after a dramatic 5-4 penalty shootout win over Peru in their intercontinental play-off on Tuesday - but their monumental challenge has only just begun.   

The teams failed to score in regulation and extra time at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Doha before goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne proved to be the star for Australia by saving the last penalty from Alex Valera in the shootout.

The victory sees the Socceroos into a fifth-consecutive World Cup, an incredible achievement given the country's 32-year absence before John Aloisi sealed entry into the 2006 competition.

However, Australia will face a rude awakening upon their arrival to Qatar, with an opening match against arguably the world's best player and team in Kylian Mbappe and France.

Graham Arnold's side will play the reigning champions in their first match at the tournament - a team littered with international superstars including Paul Pogba, Raphael Varane and Karim Benzema.

Contrastingly, the Socceroos' squad is largely made up of A-League players rather than footballers from Europe's top leagues - a far cry from Australia's decorated teams of the past.

Australia and France have played each other on matchday one in the recent past, with the French winning 2-1 in the opening game of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Les Bleus offer a vastly different challenge this time around, with two of the world's most lethal goal scorers in Mbappe and Benzema - supported by a deep, powerful and young squad.

Mbappe finished second in Europe's Golden Boot, his 28 goals behind only that of Bayern Munich's untouchable No.9 Robert Lewandowski (35).
