Novak Djokovic pulls OUT of French Open and is now no longer world No.1

World No.1 Novak Djokovic has pulled out of the French Open with a knee injury.

The defending Roland Garros champion picked up a five-set win over Francisco Cerundolo on Monday but appeared to aggravate an existing knee problem during the victory. He had been drawn to play Casper Ruud in the quarter-finals, and was the favourite with most to go on and win the trophy for the fourth time in his career.

But he has had to pull out with a knee problem that could also have serious permutations for Wimbledon which commences next month. Roland Garros organisers said: "Due to a torn medial meniscus in his right knee (discovered during an MRI scan performed today), Novak Djokovic, who was supposed to play Casper Ruud in the quarter-finals tomorrow (Wednesday), has been forced to withdraw from the Roland-Garros tournament." Norwegian seventh seed Ruud will therefore progress straight to the semi-finals.

Djokovic's withdrawal also means Italian Jannik Sinner will become world number one at the end of the tournament. Follow Record Sport on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for all of the up-to-the minute breaking news, video and audio on the SPFL, the Scotland national team and beyond.
