Novak Djokovic provides vaccine update for French Open & Wimbledon

World number one Novak Djokovic has said he’ll give up his chance to become the most successful male tennis player if he’s forced to get the COVID-19 vaccines.

This comes just weeks after the Serbian was deported from Australia ahead of the first Grand Slam of the season when the government cancelled his visa.

The 34-year-old currently sits on 20 Grand Slam titles, one behind Spanish superstar Rafael Nadal who won the Australian Open last month, and level with Roger Federer.

That doesn’t seem to matter to Djokovic, though, who told the BBC when asked if he would give up the chance of winning more Grand Slams over his vaccine stance: “Yes. That’s the price I’m willing to pay.

“Because the principles of decision making on my body are more important than any title or anything else. I’m trying to be in tune with my body as much as I can be.”

The 35-year-old has won Wimbledon six times and has lifted the French Open trophy twice.

He is the reigning champion of both competitions, winning three Grand Slams last year alone.

The British tennis club have not offered any assurances that Djokovic will be allowed to play, despite there being no restrictions in place by the government.

“For me, as an elite professional athlete, I have always carefully reviewed and assessed everything that comes in. Based on the information that I got, I decided not to take the vaccine.”

Despite refusing the COVID-19 vaccine, Djokovic did address rumours of his support of the anti-vaccine movement.

“I was never against vaccination. I understand that globally, everyone is trying to put a big effort into handling this virus. I keep my mind open to getting the vaccine.”
