Not quite Powerlines but Sundowns knock the lights out of Mathaithai in cup drubbing

It wasn't exactly the 24-0 type of punishment they meted out to Powerlines FC a decade ago, but Mamelodi Sundowns breezed into the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals with a 6-0 romping past Mathaithai FC at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Tuesday evening.

After starting such a strong team days before facing Pitso Mosimane's Egyptian giants Al Ahly in the CAF Championship at home, many expected Downs to put another record scoreline past the ABC Motsepe League side.

Sundowns took the lead with just two minutes on the clock when Bradley Ralani opened his account for the Brazilians after he tucked away Themba Zwane's rebounded shot.

Zwane then got himself on the scoresheet just two minutes later when he rifled the ball into the roof of the net on his weaker left with Ralani turning provider this time.

Mathaithai settled down a bit, but the Brazilians could easily have been four or five-nil up by half-time as Ralani, Thabiso Kutumela and Neo Maema all spurned good opportunities, while a Rushine de Reuck header hit the crossbar.

The Mathaithai did well in the first 25 minutes of the second half to keep the Brazilians at bay, but the floodgates were opened in the 66th minute when Kutumela had a simple tap-in from close range.

Kutumela grabbed his second six minutes later when Downs launched a quick counter, and Lebohang Maboe released the former Maritzburg man, who rounded the keeper and passed into an empty net.

The counter-attack was proving too much for Mathaithai to deal with, and this time it was Neo Maema who surged forward on the break and his through ball found Maboe, who produced a delightful chip over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net for the fifth in the 84th minute.
