Norwich City figure makes honest transfer admission involving Emi Buendia

Following an unsuccessful season in the top flight, Norwich City now find themselves back in the Championship for next season. 

Over the last number of seasons, the Canaries have found themselves constantly between the top two leagues in football and this season they will be looking to strengthen their side in the hope of going back up, but also hoping for a long term view to become a stable side in the top flight.

Reflecting on the business his club did last summer, the club’s Sporting Director Stuart Webber told the club’s Official Media: “We sold our best player [Emi Buendia] because he made it very clear when the season finished that he won’t be here next year. We haven’t got the capability to give him £100,000 a week to stay and give us one more year.

“If we replaced Emi with one player, we wouldn’t have been good enough. We have to sign players that have future value for us.

“We have to have the ability that if things go wrong we can sell players. If you take the Cover period this business lost £35million which bankrupts most. We survived that by selling Ben Godfrey and Jamal Lewis.”

Furthermore, Webber admitted that the club need to try and find balance in their recruitment otherwise it could carry serious consequences for them as he said: “The toughest part of our job is trying to balance off our ambition to be and sustain ourselves in the Premier League whilst making sure we still have a football club. We make big mistakes, we go bust.

“If we didn’t get the balance right, we could easily be mid-table in the Championship and we could comfortably do that by not taking any risks. Ultimately, that is where we are in the football pecking order.”
