Noel McGrath to captain Tipperary in 2023, Seamus Callanan and Patrick 'Bonner' Maher return

Three-time All-Ireland winner Noel McGrath will captain Tipperary in 2023.

New manager Liam Cahill last night named a 40-man 'pre-league' training panel, which also includes midfielder/half-forward McGrath's fellow veterans of the 2010, 2016 and 2019 championship triumphs Seamus Callanan (34) and Patrick 'Bonner' Maher (33).

McGrath, who turns 32 next month, succeeds Ronan Maher as captain. The defender will be vice-captain next month.

Noel's younger brothers John and Brian are also part of the extended panel, drawn from 25 clubs, which Tipperary said did not include currently injured players and could change before the league begins in the first weekend of February.

Kilruane McDonagh's captain Jerome Cahill, who scored two goals in his side's drawn county final with Kiladangan and set one up in the replay win, is not named, having said recently that he had "a good balance in my life at the moment which I probably wouldn’t get if I was training five nights a week."

Also absent are 2019 All-Star goalkeeper Brian Hogan, who is reportedly travelling next year and 2014 All-Star John 'Bubbles' O'Dwyer, who missed the 2022 campaign due to a knee injury.

Niall O'Meara and Bryan O'Meara return after travelling last year and former Premier U21 Shane Neville, now playing for Cratloe in Clare, is the only player based outside the county to be included.
