'No better place for a comeback': SA's Kevin Anderson returns to competitive tennis

Kevin Anderson is back.

14 months since announcing an emotional retirement from competitive tennis, South Africa's enigmatic 37-year-old will be on the court again at the Infosys Hall of Hame Open in Newport, Rhode Island - an ATP Tour 250 event.

He has accepted a wildcard entry.

Fittingly, Anderson's seventh and final title victory before his hiatus came at the tournament's 2021 edition, when he beat American Jenson Brooksby 7-6, 6-3.

"I couldn’t think of a better place to make my comeback, and I'm excited to hit the grass once again," he said in a statement.

Anderson's career has been dogged by injuries, which came to a head in 2019 and 2020 when he needed two separate surgeries on his right knee, nullifying the gains of a prosperous two-year period between 2017 and 2018.

During that time, he managed to reach a career-high 5th on the world rankings while being the runner-up at the US Open and Wimbledon.

Indeed, Anderson's run in the latter Grand Slam event was memorable as he first stunned Roger Federer in the quarter-finals, winning the fifth set 13-11 before doing it again in a semi-final against John Isner, an epic 26-24 fifth set.

He resumes with a 354-243 winning record.
