Five flood alerts still in place for Greater Manchester with multiple roads shut

Five flood alerts remain in place in Greater Manchester this morning following a long spell of heavy rain.

The Environment Agency issued the warnings yesterday (Sunday) after the Met Office issued a yellow warning weather warning for rain until 11.59pm. A number of roads were closed yesterday due to flooding and surface water, with further closures put in place overnight.

According to the Environment Agency, people living in areas covered by the flood alerts should 'be prepared' as waters levels rise. Although the Met Office predicts a much drier day today, the flood alerts remain in place.

The five alerts are in place for the Upper River Irwell catchment with Oldham, Bolton, Rochdale, Haslingden, Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall, the Upper River Douglas from Horwich Star Vale to Appley Bridge including Adlington, Blackrod, Wigan, Standish, and Gathurst, the Lower River Irwell catchment also includes the Rivers Irk and Medlock, Wince and Worsley Brooks and their tributaries, the Middle River Mersey catchment including areas near Bramhall, Stockport, Sale, Altrincham and Urmston and the River Glaze catchment including Leigh and East Wigan.

In Wigan, Loire Drive at Robin Park was shut off yesterday due to 'reports of flood water entering homes due to surface water'. Council workers and fire crews were called to the scene.

At around 12.45am this morning, Wigan Council announced further road closures at Tanner's Lane in Golborne, Saddle Junction, from Pottery Road to Southgate and Scot Lane in Wigan. Drivers have been urged to check before they travel.

According to the Met Office, today should be a largely dry day with cloudy weather forecast.
