Nintendo reveals Switch 2 release date and where to pre-order

Nintendo has revealed the release date of its latest gaming console, the Switch 2, during a video presentation event that provided an in-depth look at the new hardware. More than eight years after the release of the original Nintendo Switch, the second version will make its way into the hands of gamers on June 5, 2025.

The video presentation gave gamers a glimpse of what the new hardware will be capable of. Highlights include a much larger screen and JoyCon controllers that now attach magnetically instead of sliding on and off.

Nintendo has packed in much more impressive processing power to keep up with the more graphically intensive games that release these days.

Nintendo president, Shuntaro Furukawa, said the Switch 2 was a “leap forward” for the company and its customers.

“Nintendo Switch 2 is the next step in at-home gaming that can be taken on the go based on eight years of play and discovery that began with Nintendo Switch,” he said.

“With its new features that expand the possibilities of gaming experiences, I truly believe that Nintendo Switch 2 is a leap forward in our journey of putting smiles on the faces of everyone that Nintendo touches.”

In terms of launch games, it was announced Mario Kart World, an open-world version of the popular racing series, will be one of the first brand new games to launch on Nintendo's newest hardware.

Thankfully, Nintendo is still following through on its promise to ensure that all existing games for the Switch platform will be compatible with the new console. Don't go throwing out your current library of Switch games if you plan to upgrade as all of your save games should carry across too.
