Nigerian athletes emerge champions as CAA zone II Championships end in Ghana

Team Nigeria emerged champions at the 2024 Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Zone II Senior Athletics Championships, which has just ended in Accra, Ghana.

Team Nigeria won 13 gold medals, four silver and one bronze to place first at the championships. The host nation, Ghana, was second with eight gold, nine silver and six bronze medals, just as Burkina Faso finished third with five gold, six silver and four bronze medals.

Togo with three gold, two silver and three bronze medal was fourth, while Mali with two gold, one silver and two bronze medals finished fifth, as Senegal with one gold, four silver and six bronze medal placed seventh.

President of Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Tonobok Okowa, who is also the President of Africa Zone II Athletics, commended the athletes for their performance, assuring them of a brighter future.

“Nigeria’s athletics will offer more to the World if encouragement comes from all and sundry to assist these athletes,” Okowa said. “I am elated and proud of our young athletes, and we as a federation would continue to try our best to encourage them to enable them succeed.”

AFN Technical Director, Samuel Onikeku, former president, Chief Solomon Ogba, and AFN board member representing South west zone, Dr. Solomon Alao, were appreciative of the athletes’ prowess in Ghana.

One major highlight of the closing ceremony was the women’s Mix 4x400m relay, which Nigeria picked the gold beating Ghana to the tape.

Also, Nigeria’s emerging javelin thrower, Samuel Adams Kure, thrilled the spectators when he won the gold with a throw of 70.23m.

Kure said: “There is more in the tank.”
