Nigeria’s Super Eagles drop places in latest FIFA ranking

Super Eagles of Nigeria dropped position in the latest FIFA world ranking released on Thursday.

The ranking that was published on FIFA’s website saw the Eagles drop from 28th position to 30th.

In Africa, the 2023 AFCON runners-up are in third place behind Morocco and Senegal.

Morocco occupies the number one position on the continent and 13th in the world.

The Senegalese are second in Africa and are ranked 17th globally.

In the last ranking that was released in February, the Eagles moved up 14 places from 42nd to 28th position.

The massive jump was due to their impressive performance at the 2023 AFCON.

Last month’s 2-1 win against bitter rivals Black Stars of Ghana in Marrakech, Morocco, was not enough to prevent the Eagles from dropping.

South Africa’s Bafana Bafana, who will be guests to the Eagles in Group C, on match day three of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers which will resume in June dropped to 59th place.

Benin Republic, who will also take on the Nigerian team in June in the qualifiers, moved up to 97th position.

After two games in the World Cup qualifiers, the Eagles are third on two points.

South Africa, with one win and one draw are second on three points and Benin Republic occupy bottom in the six-team table with one point.

Meanwhile, reigning World Cup champions, Albiceleste of Argentina are the highest ranked team as they seat at number one spot.

Two-time World Cup winners and 2022 runners-up France occupy number two spot while Belgium seat at the number three.
