Nigeria moves up 14 places in latest FIFA ranking

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have moved up 14 places from 42nd position to 28th in the latest FIFA/Coca-cola men’s world ranking.

The latest ranking was announced on FIFA’s official website on Thursday.

In Africa, the Super Eagles moved from number six to number three position while Morocco occupy top spot on the continent and Senegal second.

The elephants of Cote d’Ivoire, who won their third Africa Cup of Nations title on Sunday, moved up 10 places to 39th.

The last time the Eagles got to 28th spot in the world ranking was in 2008.

The Eagles’ massive jump in the ranking is attributed to their performance at the AFCON 2023 in Côte d’Ivoire.

After a shaky start which saw them draw 1-1 with Equatorial Guinea, the Jose Peseiro-led team went all the way to final.

Unfortunately, they could not end the competition on a high, as they lost 2-1 to hosts Côte d’Ivoire in Sunday’s final.

Meanwhile, there are no changes in the top 10 of the ranking, world champions Argentina, France, England, Belgium and Brazil are first, second, third, fourth and fifth respectively.

Netherlands occupy number six, at number seven is Portugal, Spain is at number eight, Italy at number nine and 10 is Croatia.

The next edition of the FIFA/Coca-Cola ranking will be published on 4 April.
