Nigeria battles South Africa, Kenya, Algeria, others for rugby ticket
Nigeria’s senior men’s rugby national team, Black Stallions, have been pitted against world champions, South Africa and some other tough countries in the African men’s Sevens Rugby Olympics 2024 Qualifying Championship billed for Harare Sports Club, Zimbabwe, from October 16 to 17, 2023.
Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF), on Tuesday, said the other countries to jostle for the Olympics ticket with Nigeria are Uganda, hosts, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Zambia, Kenya, Madagascar, Tunisia, Burkina Faso, Namibia, Algeria and Cote d’Ivoire.
NRFF General Manager, Azeez Ladipo, told The Guardian that the winner of the 12-nation championship in Zimbabwe would automatically qualify for the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
“The championship in Zimbabwe will be tough and we will prepare hard to give it our best shot. At the end of the championship, the winner will qualify for the Paris Olympics, while the second and third placed teams will join other continents in a tourney organised by the World Rugby Federation to determine their qualification from that level.
“We hope to give a good fight in Zimbabwe after the successful outing in Mauritius, where Nigeria took the second position,” he said.
