Nigeria approached me for Super Eagles job – Cannavaro

Legendary Italian defender Fabio Cannavaro has revealed that he rejected an offer from Nigeria to become head coach of the Super Eagles.

Following the exit of Finidi George, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) threw the Super Eagles coaching job open and eventually announced Bruno Labaddia, who later turned the offer down.

Other coaches who were linked to the job include Harve Renard and former Sweden coach Janne Andersson.

Former Nigeria international and current NFF Technical Director, Austin Eguavoen, has since taken over the position.

Cannavaro in a recent interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport revealed that he received offers from Nigeria and Iranian clubs after leaving Udinese in May, 2024.

“I had offers from Nigeria [national team] and Iranian clubs, but I want to wait for Serie A and European clubs until December. After that, I may start travelling again,” Cannavaro said.

Cannavaro captained Italy to become World Cup champions in 2006 in Germany, which was their fourth title.

He was named FIFA Player of the Year and Ballon d’Or award winner also in 2006.

After his retirement, Cannavaro was appointed a global brand ambassador and technical consultant of Al-Ahli Club of Dubai on 25 August 2011.

In July 2013, after Cosmin Olăroiu took charge as new head coach of Al-Ahli, Cannavaro was named as his first team coach and guided Al-Ahli to UAE Pro League and UAE League Cup titles in his first season in charge.
