Nicole Turner bags bronze at World Championships in Madeira
Nicole Turner has won Ireland's second medal at the World Para Swimming Championships in Madeira, with the Laois woman claiming a bronze medal in the SM6 200m individual medley.
Turner's fast start and determined finish saw her clock three minutes 12.62 seconds as she chased home the British pair of Maisie Summers-Newton and Grace Harvey.
"I’m delighted, Madeira must be a special place because every time I come I end up on the podium and to be honest, even today, the focus wasn’t on today, the focus was on Saturday, so I think it’s always a bonus when you do well in a race that you are not expecting to," Turner said afterwards.
Barry McClements finished a creditable fifth in the final of the S9 100m butterfly in 1:02.64.
McClements will race twice more this week, with his favoured 100m backstroke taking place on Friday.
Speaking after the race, he said: "I’m a bit disappointed because I wanted a PB in it, but I’m not going to PB in every race so I’m not going to beat myself up too much."
Róisín Ní Riain, who secured an impressive bronze in the 100m S13 butterfly on Sunday, is the sole Irish competitor in action on Wednesday.
The Limerick swimmer will take to the blocks in S13 100m backstroke final.
