Nick Kyrgios’ ex-girlfriend Chiara Passari breaks silence over assault charge

Nick Kyrgios’ ex-girlfriend Chiara Passari has spoken out for the first time after the Australian tennis player was charged with assaulting her.

Wimbledon quarter-finalist Kyrgios was charged with common assault of Passari on Tuesday and is due to face court in Australia in August, reports the Canberra Times.

The alleged incident took place in December 2021 as confirmed by police in Canberra – and the allegation is that Kyrgios grabbed Passari – with the charge carrying a maximum sentence of two years in prison.

While Kyrgios is yet to discuss the incident directly, he took to Instagram to post a photo of himself interacting a young female fan with the caption: ‘This is why I play… To all my youngsters out there, believe in yourself’.

Kyrgios and Passari dated from 2020 to late last year – with the tennis star now engaged Costeen Hatzi – and the world No.40’s ex-girlfriend has now broken her silence on the incident.

Responding to an Instagram comment which defended her, Passari said: ‘Thank you. Finally someone smart enough to understand how the justice system works.’

Meanwhile, Kyrgios’ brother Christos has also spoken out over the allegations, posting: ‘Haters and liars will always try bring us down – we keep it 100 and push forward.’

The 27-year-old faces Cristian Garin in the last eight at Wimbledon on Wednesday, looking to reach a Grand Slam semi-final for the first time in his career.

‘ACT Policing can confirm a 27-year-old Watson man is scheduled to face the ACT Magistrates Court on the 2nd of August in relation to one charge of common assault following an incident in December 2021,’ police said on Tuesday.
