Niamh Fahey a doubt for upcoming Nations League games

Niamh Fahey is a doubt for Ireland's upcoming UEFA Nations League double-header against Northern Ireland and Hungary after picking up an injury playing for Liverpool on Wednesday.

The Reds captain was substituted in the closing stages of the first half of a 3-1 friendly defeat to Manchester United at Carrington, with what appears to be a recurrence of a calf injury.

"Unfortunately for Niamh it's the same calf problem she had before the World Cup," said Liverpool boss Matt Beard.

"She will have a scan on Friday so we will know the extent of it then, but Niamh felt it pull so that’s not a good sign."

The results of Fahey's scan will be watched closely by Eileen Gleeson, who will in interim charge of the Ireland team for the games against Northern Ireland at the Aviva Stadium on 23 September, and against Hungary in Budapest on 26 September.

Beard also provided an update on Leanne Kiernan, who missed the majority of the 2022/23 Women's Super League season with an ankle injury, before being left out of Vera Pauw's Ireland squad for the Women's World Cup this summer.

"Leanne had an injection the week before last and she is back running," added Beard on the Cavan native. "She still has got a little bit of pain but is progressing."

Liverpool open their WSL campaign with a trip to Arsenal on 1 October.
