NFF not planning to slash Peseiro’s salary, says Gusau

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) says it is not planning to cut Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro’s salary as reported by some media organisations.

Peseiro’s current contract will expire at the end of this month. The 63-year-old currently earns $70,000 per month.

An online media outfit, ESPN, had reported that Peseiro might be asked by the NFF to take a significant pay cut to remain in charge of the team.

According to the report, it is unclear whether the NFF will keep the Portuguese, but he will be offered new terms with a reduced salary. The report further stated that if Peseiro is let go, the NFF is looking at local replacements, with Emmanuel Amunike and Finidi the front-runners.

However, NFF President, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, told The Guardian, yesterday, that there was no iota of truth in the story. “It’s not true. If there is any story from the NFF, you will see it on our official website,” he said.

Asked if the NFF would retain Peseiro with his current $70,000 monthly pay, the NFF boss said: “When the time comes, you will hear our decision.”

Peseiro was appointed Super Eagles head coach in May 2022 by the former board, led by Amaju Pinnick.

Though he qualified the Super Eagles for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations following his side’s 3-2 win against the Leone Stars of Sierra Leone on Sunday, some Nigerians still expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s performance as exemplified by the clash in Monrovia, where the Super Eagles squandered a 2-0 lead to gift the Leone Stars 2-2 before Kelechi Iheanacho’s late goal saved the day.
