Newcastle West prevail in extra-time to see off Clonmel

It took extra time after a dramatic game at FBD Semple Stadium, but Newcastle West have set up a Munster club final with Kerry club champions Kerins O'Rahillys in two weeks’ time thanks to a five-point win over Clonmel Commercials.

The Tipperary champions had led by the narrowest of margins at half time – 1-04 to 0-06 – after Sean O’Connor found the net on the verge of half-time, before Newcastle West outscored their opponents by seven points to six to force the extra 20 minutes.

An Emmet Rigter goal - the last kick of the first half of extra time – secured the win and put a Limerick side in the provincial decider for the first time in 14 years when Dromcollogher-Broadford recorded a historic win over Kilmurry-Ibrickane, with today's victors back in a final for the first time since 1987.

After having most of possession in the opening minutes, it was Newcastle West who opened the scoring in the fourth minute when captain Iain Corbett slotted over a superb point from out wide.

This however, spurted Clonmel Commercials into life and the Tipperary champions had the lead by the sixth minute thanks to two quick-fire scores from Jason Lonergan and Seanie O'Connor – the latter being arguably the point of the game, a well-worked effort finished off by a tightly marked O’Connor.

Newcastle West regained composure, but their losing margin could have been more if it wasn’t for the heroics of goalkeeper Michael Quilligan who superbly saved a point-blank shot on goal from Colman Kennedy who had linked up well with O’Connor to find space in front of goal.
