Newcastle United to face Crystal Palace in Carabao Cup third-round after Tranmere win
Newcastle United will take on Crystal Palace in the third-round of the Carabao Cup. The Magpies booked their place in the next round after a hard-fought and physical 2-1 win over Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park.
The home side took the lead early on as the Magpies fell asleep, allowing Elliott Nevitt to slot home a close-range tap in. However, Eddie Howe's side were level shortly before half-time after a set-piece goal by captain Jamaal Lascelles.
Chris Wood's bullet header, again from a Kieran Trippier corner, put Newcastle ahead on the night and was enough to see them through to the third round.
The draw for the next stage of the competition took place shortly after full-time, with John Aldridge and John Barnes pulling the numbers out of the hat.
Newcastle were ball number 31 and were paired with fellow Premier League side Crystal Palace. The third-round ties to take place week beginning November 7.
Speaking after the Tranmere win, Trippier said: "It would mean everything [to have a cup run] but we have come so far in a short period of time. We need to be patient, take it a step at a time and keep building as a team."
