Newcastle United's Burnley battle is effectively a £25million play-off

Eddie Howe and his players know there is more than just pride at stake going into their final game of the season.

The Magpies sit in 12th place in the top-flight with a game to go, yet they could yet slip as low as 14th position and end the campaign in their lowest place since promotion in 2017. However, they could also net a top 10 finish and increase their Premier League prize money.

Last season their 12th place finish earned them £19.8million while the team in 10th place were weighed in with a prize pot of £24.2m. With similar merit money on offer this term, United will be keen to bank them the type of money that could help sign a new player.

Going into the game, Howe said: "I respect our opposition and Burnley as a football club. "I know the position they're in but we have a job to do. We represent Newcastle and we are proud to do that. We have to do our best.

"It's an opportunity to finish in the top ten and it should be not underestimated. We will give our all to try and achieve that."
