Newcastle United put four-year offer on table for midfielder after month-long talks

Sean Longstaff has been assured of his first-team chances after receiving a four-year contract offer from Newcastle United, a report has claimed.

As things stand, Sean Longstaff is due to become a free agent at the end of the season. His contract with Newcastle United only has a couple of months left to run on it. But there remains a chance they could extend his stay.

According to The Times, there is now an offer of a four-year contract on the table for Longstaff to stay at St James’ Park. If he signs it, he would be with the club until 2026, by which time he will be in the prime of his career at 28 years old.

Longstaff has been a Newcastle United first-team player since December 2018, when the academy graduate made his debut after loan spells away at Kilmarnock and Blackpool.

In total, he has amassed 92 appearances for his hometown club, scoring five goals. Longstaff has started 12 Premier League matches this season.

A few years ago, he was attracting the likes of Manchester United, but his star has faded somewhat since. If he is to leave Newcastle now, one interested party – as TEAMtalk understands – would be Middlesbrough, if they secure promotion. West Brom, managed by Steve Bruce, are also keen.

But the Magpies are working to make sure his departure does not happen. Indeed, those on the board want Longstaff to be a key part of their future.

From his perspective, Longstaff wants assurances over playing time before committing. Since Newcastle’s Saudi-backed takeover, they have already made one signing in his position in the shape of Bruno Guimaraes – and there will be anticipation for more transfers.

But Eddie Howe has reportedly told Longstaff he can still fight for his place in the black-and-white shirt.
