Newcastle United fans make Dan Burn claim after Manchester United defender Harry Maguire's own goal

Newcastle United fans believe that Dan Burn is 'streets ahead' of Harry Maguire after the latter scored an own-goal in Manchester United's game against Tottenham Hotspur. A Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick spared the defender's blushes to secure a vital 3-2 win for Ralf Rangnick's men.

It is a result that puts the Red Devils back in the top-four after last weekend's humiliating 4-1 defeat at Manchester City. However, Maguire has come under some more criticism for another below-par performance.

The former Hull City centre-back has struggled for form since impressing for England at Euro 2020 and sits joint-fourth for the most errors leading to goals this season, with Michael Keane, Mason Holgate and James Tarkowski top of that list. Subsequently, there has been some calls for Maguire to be dropped from the forthcoming Three Lions squad ahead of two friendlies against Switzerland and Ivory Coast.

Gareth Southgate is expected to name his contingent for those matches later this month and there could be a couple of changes given the length of time since the November international break. And Burn is someone who may well be considered after putting in some excellent performances for both Newcastle and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Burn has been vital to the Magpies' recent run of form and there is an argument to be had about whether he has been the best English centre-back in 2022, with Marc Guehi also pushing for a maiden call-up. Maguire, Tyrone Mings and John Stones are amongst those who could be replaced by Burn if he is given the chance to step up.
