Declan Rice and Harry Kane defend Harry Maguire as Jaap Stam interested in Manchester United role

Manchester United-linked Declan Rice and Harry Kane have moved to defend Harry Maguire after the £80million man was booed by England supporters at Wembley on Tuesday night. Before the win over Ivory Coast, the United captain was jeered when his name was read out prior to kick-off.

It continued when Maguire had his first touch on the pitch. While he has struggled for his best form in a United shirt this season, the 29-year-old has generally shone for the Three Lions and was a stand-out during runs to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and Euro 2020 final.

Rice — who has been earmarked as a priority transfer target for United this summer — underlined that success and led calls for booing Maguire to stop. Manchester United favourite Jaap Stam says he would love to return to the club in a coaching capacity under their next permanent manager. United have accelerated plans in their search for a new first-team boss over the international break, with Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino still the two front-runners for the role.

The club are not expecting anything 'imminent' concerning their managerial situation after interviewing Ajax coach Ten Hag last week. The Manchester Evening News revealed earlier this month that Ten Hag is United's preferred candidate to become their next permanent manager, edging ahead of Pochettino.

Ajax have refused to comment on Ten Hag's future and the Dutchman
