Newcastle transfer news: 'Interest' in strike sensation PL rivals offered £60m for

Newcastle United have shown an ‘interest’ in signing Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

The Magpies brought in five new acquisitions during the January transfer window, but manager Eddie Howe is expected to make many more changes when the market re-opens.

After the takeover of the Saudi-backed consortium was finally completed last year, Newcastle became one of the richest clubs in world football.

Their new owners showcased their ambition by splashing out over £90 million in their first window at the helm, and their investment already appears to be paying off on the pitch.

Howe’s charges escaped the relegation zone with a much-needed victory over Everton on Tuesday night, sparking hope that further improvements could lie ahead.

And according to the Daily Mirror, Newcastle’s hierarchy are already planning for the summer.

The outlet claims that the St. James’ Park outfit will look to revive a deal for Lille centre-back Sven Botman ahead of next season, while also pursuing a move for Nunez.

What has Downie said about Nunez?

Nunez was the subject of a £60m bid from West Ham United last month, but it was reportedly rejected as the player would prefer to join a side playing in the Champions League.

And Downie also claims Newcastle had doubts over whether the talented 22-year-old would be willing to sacrifice European football at Benfica for a team currently fighting relegation, regardless of their newfound ambition and wealth.
