Matt Targett comments on Aston Villa future as he answers Newcastle transfer question

Matt Targett says he is "really enjoying" his time at Newcastle United but the Aston Villa loanee remains coy over a potential permanent switch to St. James' Park in the summer.

The 26-year-old has impressed in his first two starts for Newcastle, helping Eddie Howe's side collect four points from matches against Everton and West Ham.

The Magpies are unbeaten in their last five Premier League games and have won three of their last four, with Targett set to improve Newcastle's defensive structure further in the final months of the campaign.

He decided to leave Villa following the £25million arrival of Lucas Digne from Everton last month, but hasn't confirmed that his career at Villa Park has ended just yet.

When asked by the club's in-house media ahead of Saturday's clash at Brentford, the left-back did not dismiss the idea of joining Newcastle permanently, but has urged the immediate focus to remain on the battle for survival.

"It's just focusing here and now at the moment," Targett told NUFC TV.

"I'm just focusing on my own performances and helping the team make sure we don't get relegated. That's the most important thing.

"Whatever happens after that happens. I'm really enjoying my time here."
