Newcastle transfer news: Dean Henderson left in limbo as Howe locks onto Bundesliga star instead

Newcastle will pursue a deal for Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer instead of Manchester United’s Dean Henderson, according to a report.

The Magpies are looking to resolve their situation between the sticks sooner rather than later. Martin Dubravka has proved a reliable servant since arriving in January 2018, but there is doubt over his long-term future.

And while he has three years left on his contract, Newcastle want to bolster their ranks.

Newcastle have had strong links with Man Utd shot-stopper Henderson. However, reports earlier this week claimed that Eddie Howe’s side dropped their interest in the 25-year-old.

As a result, the latest from talkSPORT is that Monchengladbach’s Sommer is Newcastle’s new top target.

The 73-cap Switzerland international is also 33 and so would not provide any more longevity than Dubravka.

However, a deal for him is within easier reach than Henderson. Sommer only has one year left on his current deal at Monchengladbach and is reportedly unwilling to sign a new deal.

The report does not mention specific fees for the stopper, but Sommer would likely still command a sum as he enters the final year of his terms.

Sommer developed in Basel’s academy before moving to Grasshoppers in 2010. Four years later, he signed for Monchengladbach and has played 324 times for the Bundesliga side.

However, he feels now is the time to move on and seek a new challenge as he heads towards the final years of his career.

Sommer made his senior Switzerland debut in 2012 and starred at Euro 2020 to dump France out of the competition.

Newcastle’s chase for Sommer means Henderson will have to reconsider his approach this summer.

He wants to get back in the England squad, with Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale
