Newcastle transfer news: Clark could soon become post-January exit at St. James' Park

Transfer insider Dean Jones has revealed that Newcastle United defender Ciaran Clark has interest from MLS clubs ahead of a potential move away from St James’ Park.

The centre-back has slipped down the pecking order in Eddie Howe’s squad after the club’s trolley dash in the January transfer window.

The club made a real attempt to bolster Howe’s defence in January as they attempt to avoid the drop to the Championship.

The club signed Kieran Trippier to bolster the right-back position, and also secured deals to loan left-back Matt Targett from Aston Villa and to sign centre-back Dan Burn on a permanent basis.

Newcastle also made attempts to sign the likes of Sven Botman and Diego Carlos from Lille and Sevilla respectively, but each deal fell apart after bids were ultimately rejected.

It points to a belief that Newcastle need new central defenders in order to survive in the Premier League.

Clark is a Republic of Ireland international with 36 caps and he has remained a central member of the squad, making 13 appearances in the Premier League this season.

At the age of 32, he is a seasoned Premier League campaigner who has made 214 appearances in the top-flight, having also played for Newcastle’s rivals, Aston Villa, but it appears that he could well move on.

Jones, indeed, claims that there is interest in him from America ahead of the summer window.

He told GiveMeSport: “A couple of Newcastle players whose futures seem uncertain as things move forward are Ciaran Clark and Isaac Hayden. Clark actually has some interest from MLS so that could be one to watch for sure.”
