Newcastle told to sign ‘fantastic’ Ivan Toney

Newcastle United aren’t short of strikers with Callum Wilson, Joelinton, Chris Wood and Dwight Gayle at their disposal, but Wilson’s had injury problems, Joelinton often plays in midfield, Wood has been short of goals and Gayle is surplus to requirements, so Eddie Howe needs a new face in attack.

The Magpies have lucrative resources following their takeover by Public Investment Fund (PIF), PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media, so they’re being linked with a lot of players across Europe. Brentford’s Ivan Toney is the latest name and Frank McAvennie believes he’d be a great acquisition.

He told Football Insider: “There will be a Newcastle tax, we know that much. But Toney is a fantastic player, a wonderful talent. I really do like Toney though, I think he would be a quality addition for Newcastle. If £40million is the price, they will have to suck it up and pay.”

The 26-year-old joined Brentford on a five-year deal from Peterborough in 2020, setting them back £5m. Toney has gone on to make 89 appearances in all competitions, scoring 47 goals with 16 assists, so he’s proven himself a brilliant striker in the Championship and Premier League.

Newcastle were the ones who sold Toney to Peterborough for £350k in 2018, so they’d be paying £40m for a player they let go for peanuts years before. The uncapped English has come a lot way since then, however, so he could be a good player for the Magpies.
