Newcastle: 'Surprise' update emerges over £100k-a-week target at St James' Park

Newcastle United may no longer be interested in signing Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

It looked for some time like Henderson was destined to move to St James’ Park this summer, but that may not be the case anymore.

The Manchester Evening News reported last month that the £100,000-a-week shot-stopper was closing in on a switch to Newcastle after a frustrating season at Old Trafford.

Henderson did not play a single Premier League game last term as David de Gea re-established himself as United’s No. 1, and it appears that he needs a move away to get regular first-team football.

That move may not be to Newcastle, though, as The Telegraph has claimed that the Magpies will not be signing Henderson this summer.

Jones has admitted that he is surprised by Newcastle cooling their interest, but he has revealed that he has been told by a source at the club that Henderson will not be joining ahead of next season.

Speaking about Henderson, Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “It’s come as a bit of a surprise, but there is one source inside the club now that is indicating to people that he is not going to be pursued any longer, which definitely isn’t the message we’ve been getting from other people around the ownership up to now. So, that’s interesting.”

Henderson is highly-rated and does have an England cap to his name, but it is hard to say that failing to sign him constitutes a setback for Newcastle.

Eddie Howe currently has Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow at his disposal, and they have not done a great deal wrong when called upon.
