Newcastle stalwart Dummett to stick with club as Howe project inspires new deals

Newcastle United academy product Paul Dummett will reportedly put pen to paper on a new deal, rather than leave the club for nothing.

Dummett is the Magpies’ longest serving player. The left-back made his debut back in the 2012/13 season, after coming through the academy.

He has racked up more than 200 appearances for Newcastle, scoring four goals and assisting one.

This season, he has been plagued by injury. Indeed, a calf injury has kept the 30-year-old out for much of the season; as such, he has played just three league games.

He appeared just 15 times in the Premier League last season, too.

Given his lack of game time, it could be possible for him to want a move away. The left-back is out of contract at the end of the season, and could leave for nothing.

However, The Sun reports that Dummett is set to pen a new deal at St James’ Park, rather than move on for free. Fabian Schar could have also left the club for nothing, but opted to remain last week.

Indeed, it appears Eddie Howe’s project at Newcastle is inspiring his players to want to stay and play for him. The Magpies are currently 10th in the table.

As such, there could be a number of other contract renewals at St James’ Park soon.

The Magpies are reportedly in talks with Sean Longstaff over a new deal, too.

Howe seemed confident that the renewal for Longstaff would soon be confirmed. The midfielder has started 12 times in the league this season.

“We’ve been talking with him and representatives for a while and we hope that we can reach a successful conclusion there,” Howe said.

Similarly, the manager appears keen to come to an agreement over Dummett’s deal, too.

“With Paul Dummett, we’re keen for him to stay. Fingers crossed we can find a positive resolution.”
