Newcastle's time-wasting vs Liverpool can't compete with Maccabi Haifa's insane effort

Newcastle United certainly did their upmost to take a point home from Anfield on Wednesday night.

While the Toon were ultimately stripped of their unbeaten record in the Premier League this season by Fábio Carvalho’s stoppage-time winner, it looked for the longest time that they wouldn’t be leaving Liverpool empty handed.

Not only did Eddie Howe’s men take the lead through Alexander Isak’s debut goal and threaten for a second only to be denied by VAR, but they also threw the kitchen sink at their attempts to hold onto said advantage.

That’s because Newcastle parked the bus so firmly, pulling up the handbrake and applying the steering wheel lock to boot, that Liverpool were practically left tearing their hair out as they fought to turn things around.

And while Roberto Firmino’s equaliser and the aforementioned strike by Carvalho ultimately rose above the time-wasting, it still meant that the Reds had to huff and puff on their way to victory nevertheless.

Whether it was Nick Pope lying on the ball for what felt like forever or an uncanny amount of cramps taking place after the hour-mark, the Magpies certainly went above and beyond the call of duty to infuriate their hosts.

So much so, in fact, that Jurgen Klopp couldn’t hold back from addressing it in his post-match interview, telling BBC Sport: “I am really happy that everyone saw it tonight. It was hard to take. It was a difficult game anyway, Newcastle invested a lot to close us down.

“They were close to getting pretty much everything for it. Of course everyone wants to see a football game and when it is interrupted that often it is not nice for anybody.
