Newcastle 'keeping tabs' on £67m star who 'has no ceiling'

Newcastle United are ‘keeping tabs’ on Benfica striker Darwin Nunez ahead of a potential summer move, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 22-year-old has reportedly caught the eye of several European heavyweights in recent months following a string of outstanding displays both domestically and across the continent.

According to Portuguese outlet Record, several Premier League clubs are interested in securing Nunez’s services, with Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle listed as potential suitors.

It’s believed that Benfica have placed an €80 million (£67m) price tag on their prized asset, with Barcelona and AC Milan also said to be invested in the Uruguay international’s progress.

The hunt for Nunez’s signature comes after he registered 14 goals and 12 assists in 44 appearances for the Eagles last term before elevating his game to new heights this time around.

In the current campaign, the South American rising star has racked up 28 goal contributions in just 33 outings across all competitions, including bagging the winning goal against Ajax in Benfica’s Champions League last-16 tie.

Nunez’s impressive exploits have opened the door to a potentially imminent exit, and the Magpies could aim to bring him in to spearhead their new-look attack next season.

West Ham failed to sign Nunez with a club-record £60m bid during the winter window, but O’Rourke believes that won’t have dissuaded Newcastle’s interest in him.

He told GiveMeSport: “Darwin Nunez has done well at Benfica; he was a West Ham target in January.
