Newcastle keep close attention on Diogo Costa as new goalkeeper solution, with price tag revealed

Newcastle United could make Diogo Costa their new number one if they are willing to surpass a €40m asking price by Porto, according to a report.

Finding a new goalkeeper is a priority issue for Newcastle this summer. Martin Dubravka has guarded their net for the majority of this season. However, it may be beneficial to find a younger first choice.

Dubravka has hinted that he would like to stay at the club. Yet that could end up being in the role of a backup. Newcastle have been linked with the likes of Dean Henderson from Man Utd to take his starting spot.

Born in Switzerland to Portuguese parents, he joined Porto’s academy in 2011. Eight years later, he became a fully fledged member of their first team.

To date, Costa has amassed 68 appearances for Porto. Within them, he has conceded just 61 goals, keeping 27 clean sheets.

In the 2021-22 season, he enjoyed 43 outings, during which he let in 38 goals and kept 17 shutouts.

Although under contract until 2026, it could have been his last campaign with Porto. Interest from Newcastle will give the Primeira Liga champions something to think about.

According to JN, Porto have placed an asking price of €40m (£34.3m) on Costa’s shoulders. His release clause, if Newcastle want to avoid haggling, is €60m (£51.5m).

For context, Newcastle’s record signing to date is £39.6m man Joelinton. A deal for Costa could therefore be one of the club’s most expensive ever.

Yet they have the financial backing to complete such a transaction thanks to their Saudi owners. This will be their first summer transfer window at the helm.
