Newcastle: Howe could have intriguing transfer plan at St James' Park

Newcastle United could choose not to welcome any further signings to St James’ Park until the final weeks of the transfer window, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

Eddie Howe, who is preparing for his first full season at the helm following his appointment as the Magpies’ boss last November, has been busy bolstering his squad this summer.

With Newcastle being the richest club in world football, following a £305million takeover led by the Saudi Arabia-based Public Investment Fund last October, the Tyneside giants have not been afraid to splash the cash this summer.

Matt Targett was the first signing of the transfer window, with the left-back joining in a £15million deal from Premier League rivals Aston Villa.

The move came after the 26-year-old made 16 appearances during a loan spell with Newcastle during the second half of last season.

Targett was followed through the St James’ Park door by England international goalkeeper Nick Pope after a £10million agreement was reached with Burnley following their relegation to the Championship.

The most recent arrival was 22-year-old central defender Sven Botman, who has joined in a £35million switch from French side Lille.

Having been in dialogue with Sky Sports colleague Pete Graves, Sheth understands that Newcastle are not in a rush to add further reinforcements to Howe’s squad.

The journalist believes the Magpies could hold off spending big on even more fresh faces until the final stages of the transfer window.
