Newcastle: 'Dialogue still open' with colossal £36m January target

Newcastle United’s dialogue with LOSC Lille defender Sven Botman and his representatives is ‘still open’, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Magpies were reportedly hoping to make the 22-year-old their statement signing in January after identifying him as one of the most promising young centre-backs in Europe.

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle saw an opening offer of £30 million turned down by Lille in the winter window, declaring their prized asset was not for sale.

The firm stance of the reigning French champions forced Eddie Howe’s charges to move onto alternative targets, with Sky Sports claiming they were unwilling to match Botman’s £36m price tag.

However, in a recent interview with The Athletic, co-owner Amanda Staveley revealed that the Dutch Under-21 international ‘desperately wanted to come’ to St. James’ Park and still ‘very much’ does.

But reports in Italian media have stated that Newcastle are set to face fierce competition for Botman’s signature, with Serie A giants AC Milan also credited with an interest.

Milan News reporter Antonio Vitiello has disclosed how the Rossoneriare in talks with Lille as they attempt to reach a ‘final agreement’ before declaring that the 6 foot 5 beast would ‘very much like to play’ at San Siro.

Botman burst onto the scene last season, forming a formidable partnership alongside Jose Fonte in the heart of defence, steering Les Dogues to their first Ligue 1 title in 10 years.

And the youngster has carried his good form into the current campaign, achieving a WhoScored season rating of 6.87, the third-highest amongst his teammates.
