Newcastle boss Eddie Howe defends Chris Wood after Jamie Carragher question

Eddie Howe insists Chris Wood has done 'really well' after Jamie Carragher pointed out it 'hasn't happened' for the Newcastle United striker in front of goal. The New Zealand international has started every match since signing from Burnley in January, but only has one goal to his name so far.

Newcastle's number nine Callum Wilson has proved a positive update on his return from injury, but as of yet there is no return date pencilled for the top goalscorer. Howe has previously described Wood's contributions as 'outstanding', but the 30-year-old's lack of goals has prompted questions over his impact so far.

Wood hit the net in the first half against Wolves but his goal was disallowed after a VAR check.

The Magpies head coach spoke to Sky Sports presenters Kelly Cates and Carragher ahead of the Friday night clash with Wolves. Howe was asked about a number of topics including the response to the heavy Tottenham defeat, as well as his view on the relegation battle.

Carragher then asked the Newcastle boss to provide an assessment on Wood's performances so far. Howe told Sky Sports: "I think he's done really well Jamie, he's given us a different dimension. He's taken the pressure off us in various phases of the game which we weren't excelling at before he came.

"I think the results speak for themselves with him in the team. He's helped us in every respect. Yes, he probably doesn't have the goals he's wanted, but for me it's all about the team staying in the division and he will have played a big part if we can achieve that aim."
