Newcastle are 'very interested' in £45m star at St James' Park

Newcastle are “very, very interested” in signing Chelsea forward Timo Werner, according to Bild Sport journalist Christian Falk.

And Falk reckons that Eddie Howe has been chasing the Germany international’s signature since January, with the Toon Army boss desperate to improve his striker options ahead of the new season.

Falk recently took to Twitter to confirm Newcastle’s interest in Werner, with Chelsea willing to let him leave this summer, providing they sign a replacement.

Werner signed for Chelsea from Leipzig two years ago, but the 26-year-old flop has struggled to show the same form that convinced the Londoners to pay £45m for his services.

He has been directly involved in 44 goals in 89 games during his Stamford Bridge career, but the German has scored just 10 times in the Premier League, which is an extremely underwhelming return for someone who racked up 93 goals in four years at Leipzig.

As a result of his struggles, Werner could seek pastures new before September’s transfer deadline and Falk reckons that Newcastle are a potential destination.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Newcastle are very, very interested in Werner and they were also interested in the winter.”

When Werner arrived in English football, he was one of the most highly-rated strikers around Europe, having just enjoyed the best season of his career, scoring 34 goals in all competitions.

His exploits persuaded Chelsea to pay £45m for his services, and while they’ve regularly paid that much for players, it was still a significant fee for a 24-year-old with no Premier League experience.
