New Sheffield Wednesday signing Heneghan outlines opposition view of the Owls

Sheffield Wednesday new recruit Ben Heneghan has given his thoughts on what it will be like for opposition sides to play against the Owls this upcoming season. The defender, who played against Wednesday for AFC Wimbledon last season, made clear that: "Playing against them we knew it was a very good squad with some talented individuals and more than likely they are the favourites to win the game.

"The game plan at Wimbledon was to stay in the game and if we get some chances, to take them but you don’t get that many chances. Hopefully this year if I’m in the team, there will be a lot less as well.”

When asked about playing in front of the Hillsborough crowd, Heneghan stated that: "I can’t wait to be honest, you want to play in front of big crowds when you start out your career. I’m excited and really looking forward to it.

“The atmosphere at the ground is brilliant so to be playing in that is really exciting. We [Wimbledon] did alright last year to be honest.”

Heneghan played the full match as Wimbledon were defeated 2-1 by Wednesday in April. It took a dramatic injury-time winner from Lee Gregory to snatch all three points for the Owls, after a resolute Wimbledon had remained in the match for the duration.

Wednesday had taken an early lead through Jack Hunt, but Wimbledon were quickly on terms again when Ayoub Assal fired home past Bailey Peacock-Farrell. They then restricted the home side's chances and were unfortunate to lose the game in the way in which they did.

This was a testament to Heneghan's marshalling of his defence against a Wednesday side who would go on to boast the best home record in League One last season. The fact that he has now been added to the Owls' ranks will surely aid their attempts this season
