New pizza joint to open inside one of Stockport's most historic buildings

A new pizza spot offering wood-fired pizzas and Italian-inspired small plates will be opening in Stockport town centre this autumn. Alfredo's Social will launch in the iconic Winter's building, on Little Underbank in Stockport's Old Town.

It will take over the historic Winter's Building, which was previously home to French restaurant, Bistro Marc. In June this year, previous owners Marc Molé and Rachel Winter Jones said they were both ‘heartbroken’ at having to close the authentic French dining spot just a year after opening.

The new pizza concept comes from Jon Dootson of the Classic Building Group and Stockport Leisure Limited, who also owns the soon-to-be relaunched White Lion pub on Great Underbank, and Paul Astill, a designer who has worked on some of Manchester’s best known bars and restaurants, including Sankeys, Cane and Grain, Elnecot and Crazy Pedros. Hospitality expert, Keegan Flowers, former general manager at Cottonopolis in the Northern Quarter, will lead on the operations side.

Prior to being taken over in 2022, the Winter's building laid empty for some years, but with support from Stockport Council, the National Lottery’s heritage fund, and Cumbria Clock Company it was reclaimed - and even the space's famous clock with its figures of a soldier, a sailor and old father time, was restored. The shop was first opened as a jewellers in 1890 by Jacob Winter, and was one of the first places in the town to have electricity.
